Natural Axinite
A hydrous calcium aluminum borosilicate axinite sometimes faceted for collectors. It is strongly trichroic but, its flat wedge shaped crystals are usually too thin to make it possible to utilize the more attractive reddish brown and violet colors visible in directions parallel to the flat direction. It may be confused with chrysoberyl, hessonite, topaz or tourmaline in the yellow variety but the other colors are distinctive. Axinite occurs in the triclinic system and has a negative optical sign. Although it has only distinct not easy cleavage, it fractures easily. |
