Natural Abalone Pearls
In The Book of the Pearl, George Frederick Kunz (1856-1932) notes that a perfect specimen of an Abalone Pearl is “among the rarest, the most beautiful and the most valuable of gems.” Abalones are a mollusk with a once fairly wide population distribution. These univalve animals, found predominantly in mild temperate oceans, rarely produce pearls. In fact, actual statistics indicate that only one in 200,000 to 1 in a million animals yield a pearl of any consequence. Some pearls are sphere-like, some resemble disks and many occur in rather tooth-like shapes. Favorites of the collector are those with fanciful shapes and intense mixed colours. |

Unlike the Oriental Natural, the Akoya pearl, and the South Sea and Tahitian cultured pearls, abalone pearls are not primarily judged by their roundness. Also, unlike other types of pearls, Abalone pearls are not subjected to any type of processing, such as bleaching or buffing. The pearls essentially look the way they look coming directly from the Abalone shell. A gem – by definition – must be beautiful, rare and durable. When all the considerations required for natural pearl formation are seriously analyzed, any natural gem quality pearl of any substantial size is truly the rarest of gems. The Abalone pearl, with its true scarcity and impending extinction will prove itself the ultimate prize for the knowledgeable and informed collector.
These pearls are maiden pearls fished from Pacific waters within the last twenty years. They were found along the coast of California from Arcata south past San Diego into Baja, California as far south as Bahia Asuncion.
